This article is part of our exclusive IEEE Journal Watch series in partnership with IEEE Xplore. For as long as classrooms have existed, students have dutifully crossed their “t’s” and dotted their “i’s” on paper using pens, pencils, or paint. But a group of researchers in Taiwan envision a very different approach to learning via their AI edge-computing program. The platform allows students to draw their handwriting and artwork in midair with their fingers, while motion-tracking technology projects their writing onto a computer screen at the front of the classroom. The approach, described in a study published on 10 April in…
Eid al-Adha, which began this year on June 6th, is nicknamed the “Muslim Met Gala” for good reason. The three-day Islamic holiday is an opportunity not only for religious observance but for worship of the fashion gods, as revellers dress up to the nines. As Muslim spending on fashion grows, designers are bringing out collections aimed at the observant. What’s more, even non-Muslims are adopting the trend for “modest-wear”. Source link

The National Residential Landlords Association has accused the government of setting ‘unachievable’ and ‘unrealistic’ goals when it comes to EPC targets. It’s being proposed that every property across the private rented sector achieve a minimum EPC rating of C, which would apply to new tenancies by 2028 and existing tenancies by 2030. The fresh energy efficiency standards are expected to be confirmed in late 2026, effectively giving landlords a two-year timeframe to upgrade their stock. The NRLA said the shortage of tradespeople required to undertake the works makes this level of speed unworkable. Ben Beadle, chief executive of the National…

gleitfrosch/GettyBefore ChatGPT, there was DALL-E — the first iteration of OpenAI’s now-famous text-to-image AI model. It was released in January 2021, giving the world an early taste of the future of AI-generated imagery that was soon to come. Today, there’s a long roster of image-generating AI tools to choose from. Companies like OpenAI, Google, Midjourney, Stability AI, Ideogram, and Black Forest Labs all offer their own models, each with its own particular strengths and weaknesses. (Disclosure: Ziff Davis, ZDNET’s parent company, filed an April 2025 lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.)Also: The…
Rarely have economists spoken in such unison. Even before Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs on April 2nd, the median estimate among the 48 who were surveyed by the University of Chicago’s business school was that Mr Trump’s levies would raise inflation in 2025 by 0.8 percentage points. Meanwhile, the president’s position is that, in his press secretary’s words, “tariffs are a tax hike on foreign countries [which]…have been ripping us off”. The implication is that foreigners will “eat the tariffs” and leave America’s consumer prices unaffected. Source link
The Building Cost Information Service (BCIS) has called on Labour to focus on detailed infrastructure projects to boost economic growth. These could include the building of new hospitals, roads, schools and prisons. The BCIS provides price and cost data for the construction industry. Dr David Crosthwaite, its chief economist, said: “The government has had a difficult first year. Some of the challenges faced have been external, but some have been of its own making. “We’ve had NISTA’s commitment to an ‘investor-focused’ pipeline but what’s desperately needed is a clear outline of projects and increased public sector investment in construction. This,…

The proposed federal budget bill could reduce the dollar amount of federal student loans available…
