In data centers, pluggable optical transceivers convert electronic bits to photons, fling them across the room, and then turn them back to electronic signals, making them a technological linchpin to controlling the blizzard of data used in AI. But the technology consumes quite a bit of power. In a data center containing 400,000 GPUs, Nvidia estimates that optical transceivers burn 40 megawatts. Right now, the only way to deal with all that heat is to hope you can thermally connectthese transceivers to the switch system’s case and cool that. It’s not a great solution, says Thomas Tarter, principal thermal engineer…

It is a tenet of Donald Trump’s economic philosophy that trade deficits are bad for growth. It can also seem like a cornerstone of GDP releases. On April 30th the Bureau of Economic Analysis said that America’s economy shrank at an annual pace of 0.3% in the first quarter of 2025, the first such decline in three years. This, the bureau said, “primarily reflected an increase in imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP”. Mr Trump, apparently embarrassed by the contraction, blamed a “Biden overhang”. But though it was a bad day for him, it was a…

In two years’ time nearly all new builds will be fitted with solar panels in plans set to be announced by the Labour Party. Housebuilders will be mandated to install the panels, with the change adding £3,300 to the cost of building a semi-detached or terraced house, rising to around £4,000 for a detached property. The government is looking to expand the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to include air-to-air heat pumps and heat batteries. Air-to-air heat pumps work by taking heat from outdoors to heat a house in winter, or the opposite during the summer. Heat batteries meanwhile transform electricity into heat, which is then stored and used when required. The scheme works by offering homeowners up to £7,500 off the cost of purchasing and installing a home heat pump, and has received over 76,000 applications since launching in May 2022. Currently only air and ground source heat pumps are eligible as part of the scheme.…
